Thiruvananthapuram: The Lion Safari Park at Neyyar wildlife sanctuary has been closed for renovation and maintenance works ahead of releasing two Asiatic lions brought from Gujarat.
The two lions, which are going to be new attractions of the safari park, arrived from Gujarat on Sunday. The lions, brought from Sakkarbaug Zoological Gardens in Gujarat in exchange for two Malabar giant squirrels were brought to the city on Sunday and are temporarily placed at the zoo in the city.
Neyyar range officer Suresh J said that construction of cages, mending the fences, painting and pruning works should be done before bringing new lions to the park.
“The fencing has to be strengthened on the 1.3 km stretch. We hope that the work will be completed in two-three weeks. The park will be opened before Onam,” Suresh said.
Spread over four hectares, the lion safari park was established in 1984 at Marakkunnam, around 4km from the headquarters of Neyyar wildlife sanctuary. Though the park was a major tourist attraction with over a dozen lions, tourist visits declined following the death of one of the two remaining lionesses in the park in February. Lioness Bindu became the single inhabitant of the park. It was then the authorities took the initiative to bring two Asiatic lions in exchange for two Malabar giant squirrels.
Meanwhile, the forest officials said the lions brought from Gujarat have to adapt to the weather conditions in the state before they were released in the park.
“They also need rest and treatment for some minor injuries caused during the journey from Gujarat. As the service of zoo veterinarian and chief veterinary officer are available, it is advisable to keep the lions in the zoo before shifting them to the park,” they said.
As per the annual report, as many as 27,930 tourists came to the park, generating a revenue of Rs 73 lakh in 2017-18. The revenue was Rs 93 lakh during the previous year. The lion safari park is designed in such a way that animals can roam around freely during day time and will be housed in cages during the night. The visitors are taken around the park in a minibus.
