RAJKOT: The carcass of a lion was found in Devalia range of Gala Dhar area in Gir west division on Tuesday. The age of the dead lion was approximately 12 years.
According
to forest department the cause of lion's death is not known, the
carcass has been sent for post-mortem. The villagers informed the forest
department about the lion carcass. Chief Conservator of Forest (wildlife circle) D T Vasavda
said “We have found no evidence of poaching and there is no injury mark
found on the body. We believe that it’s natural death and the lion died
because of age.”
It
needs to be mentioned that in monsoon season the mortality rate of wild
animal is high in forest area because of mites. In February the state
government told in assembly that 204 lions died in last two years out of
that 177 died due to natural death.
