More lion deaths occurred in 2019, compared to the previous year, the Gujarat governmenttold the Legislative Assembly on Thursday. While 261 lions and their cubs died in different parts of Gujarat in the last two years, 148 deaths were recorded in 2019 and 113 were recorded in 2018, the government revealed. Of these, 11 lions and six cubs died due to “unnatural” causes, such as getting hit by a train or falling into a well, the government said.

Interestingly, the government data also revealed that unnatural deaths have reduced. On a sub-question about steps being taken by government to prevent unnatural deaths, Vasava listed several measures, including appointment of veterinary doctors as well as trackers, building of parapets around wells near forest, fencing along the railway tracks, construction of speed breakers on roads passing through sanctuaries. He added that a state-of-the-art hospital was also being constructed at Sasan-Gir to provide timely treatment to lions and other old animals.

As many as 16 persons were mauled to death by leopards in Gir-Somnath and Amreli districts in the last two years, the government revealed. While five persons had died in Gir-Somnath, 11 succumbed to their injuries in Amreli in the last two years, the government said.

Responding to a query asked by Congress MLA Punja Vansh, state Minister Vasava said at least 104 incidents of leopard attacks were reported in these two districts in the last two years. To prevent man-animal conflicts, the forest department regularly conducts awareness drives near forest areas. Villagers are also asked not to sleep in the open, he said.

Birds rescued

In a separate question about Nal Sarovar asked by Congress MLA Baldevji Thakor, Vasava said that number of criminal cases for hunting and selling birds in Nal Sarovar has reduced from 34 (2018) to 10 (2019) cases.
