'India among few countries to comply with Paris Agreement goal to keep rise in temperature in check': PM Modi

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that India is one of the few countries whose actions are compliant with the Paris Agreement goal of keeping rise in temperature to below two degree Celsius.
Addressing COP13 delegates in Gandhinagar via video conferencing from Delhi, the Prime Minister said that the country has been championing climate action based on values of conservation, sustainable lifestyle and green development model.
"India has been championing Climate Action based on the values of conservation, sustainable lifestyle and green development model," PM Modi said.
He said that India contributes to about eight per cent of the world's known bio-diversities and the country is blessed with diverse ecological habitats and has four bio-diversity hotspots. India is also home to around 500 species of migratory birds from across the globe, PM Modi said.
He said that the Constitution is inspired by the ethos of Mahatma Gandhi of non-violence and protection of animals and it finds mention is several laws and legislations.
"For ages, conservation of wildlife and habitat have been a part of our cultural ethos, which encourages compassion and coexistence. Our Vedas spoke of the protection of animals. Emperor Asoka put great emphasis on preventing the destruction of forests and the killing of animals," PM Modi said.
He further said that India's forest cover has increased significantly and the present assessment indicates that the total forest cover is 21.67 per cent of the total geographical area of the country.
"The range of our initiatives includes an ambitious target of 450 Mw in renewable energy, a push towards electric vehicles, smart cities, conservation of water and more," PM Modi said.
Speaking about the tiger population in the country, PM Modi said that the country has achieved its target of doubling the number of targets two years before the committed date of 2022.
He also said that India is supporting more than 60 per cent of the global Asian elephant population and has taken several initiatives and set standards for the conservation of Asian elephants.
India would be taking a leading role in promoting Green Economy including conservation of mountain ecology with people's participation, said PM Modi while adding that the country has launched Project Snow Leopard to protect the animal and its habitat in the Upper Himalayas.
"The Gir landscape in Gujarat is the only home for the Asiatic lion and the pride of the country. We have initiated an Asiatic Lion conservation project since January 2019 to protect them. Today, the population of Asiatic Lions stands at 523," PM Modi said.
"The Indian one-horned rhinos are found in Assam, UP and West Bengal. The government of India launched the National Conservation Strategy for the Indian one-horned rhinos in 2019," he added.
