Hyderabad zoo to welcome swamp deer, lion-tailed macaque

Moulika.KV | TNN | Updated: Feb 3, 2020, 06:47 ISTHYDERABAD: As part of the animal exchange programme with Chennai’s Vandalur Zoo, the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad will soon have some new inmates, including a pair of swamp deer and one female lion tailed macaque by the end of this month.
The zoo is going to procure these animals as part of an exchange for a one-horned rhinoceros that was sent to Vandalur zoo in August last year. “The pair of swamp deer and the lion-tailed macaque are expected to arrive by the end of this month. We have one male lion-tailed macaque now and with the arrival of a female lion-tailed macaque, we will have a pair,” said zoo curator, N Kshitija.
The paperwork to procure four grey kangaroos and one pair of meerkats in exchange for one pair of Asiatic lions is also in progress. According to the zoo officials, the kangaroos and meerkats are part of the animal exchange programme with the Yokohoma Zoological Garden in Japan.
“The animals from Japan are expected to arrive in two or three months. We gave a female Asiatic lion to the Yokohoma zoo for which they are giving us two pairs of kangaroos and one pair of meerkats. We will have these animals in the zoo for the first time,” an official said.
The zoo authorities have referred the proposal to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and are waiting for the permissions from Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Central Zoo Authority to bring the animals to the city zoo.
The Nehru Zoological Park, which is spread across 380 acres, houses 173 species and nearly 1,800 specimens.
