Mysuru: The Mysuru Zoo will soon get a lioness in exchange of birds and a wolf from the Sakkarbaugh Zoo in Gujarat. With this addition, the population of big cats will go up to four.

Currently, the zoo has Asiatic female lion Gowri and Afro-Asiatic lions Darshan and Rakshitha. Five years ago, Asiatic lions Gowri and Shankar were brought from Sakkarbaugh Zoo in Junagadh, Gujarat which is famous for breeding endangered species Asiatic lions under an exchange programme.

In May, 8-year-old Shankar, who was suffering from kidney and liver problems, died. Gowri delivered a cub in 2012 which did not survive.

W ith the shortfall of lions in Mysuru Zoo, the authorities have signed an agreement with Sakkarbaugh Zoo, Gujarat to procure a lioness in exchange of exotic species of Black Swans, SunConure and an Indian Grey Wolf.
