In May of last year, the dismembered body of a lion cub was found in the Tulsishyam Range of the Gir. The chief conservator of forests had told media outlets at the time that pug marks of lions found in the area suggested that the cub could have died as the result of a territorial conflict. Between February and May of last year, the bodies of five cubs were discovered in the Gir forest.Responding to a query in the state assembly in July of last year, Gujarat Forest Minister Ganpat Vasava had stated that 222 lions died in the Gir forest region in the last two years. Out of these deaths, only 23 were attributed to unnatural causes such as accidents. Vasava also claimed that 199 of these deaths occurred as a result of infections or ailments, including a viral outbreak.
