‘Rs 98 cr allotted for Gir lions project’

The Gujarat government, along with the Centre, has launched the ‘Asiatic Lion Conservation Project’ at a budget of Rs 97.85 crore, said Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani on Monday. He was quoting a reply by Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Babul Supriyo The response was to a question posted by Nathwani on the issue of lion conservation. He further revealed that the Centre has released Rs 23.16 crore for the lions, Rs 75.86 crore for elephants and Rs 1,010.69 crore for tigers in last three years under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitat (CSS-IDWH).

The Gujarat forest department has also brought additional area of 236.73 km of lion habitat, including Pania, Mitiyala and Girnar sanctuary, under Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, he said. The minister had also revealed that the Gujarat government has formulated legal, administrative and financial provisions for protection of Asiatic lion in Gir.

The legal provision includes declaring additional lion habitat area as sanctuary/national park, while the financial provisions are for strengthening, protection and surveillance, infrastructure, transport/ communication and infrastructure.

Further, an amount of Rs 231crore has been allocated in the region over a period of five years mainly to reduce the man-animal conflict. The State forest department has also introduced three-year package of wildlife health care and veterinary support team, including manpower and equipment. He further discussed the infrastructure developed in Gujarat for the conservation of lions. Steps have been taken to equip veterinary hospitals with fully automatic biochemistry analyzer, hematology analyzer, sonography machines, digital X-ray machines, leminar airflow machine, bacteriological incubator, oxymeter, autoclave, stereo microscope and compound microscope, etc., said the minister.

Gujarat wildlife tourism to get a boost

The state wildlife is all set for another feather in the cap as it may soon house a state-ofthe-art forest research institute. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani held a discussion in this connection with officials of the State Board for Wildlife in Gandhinagar on Monday.

The meeting was attended by Forest Minister Ganpat Vasava, Chief Secretary J N Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of Forest and Environment Rajiv Kumar Gupta, Gujarat Director General of Police Shivanand Jha along with members of the State Board for Wildlife.

Rupani said the idea for construction of a forest research institute, by striking an ecotourism balance, will be proposed to the Central Government. Further, effective guidelines will be released to establish a snake research institute in the state and a state database of snake-catchers will be prepared so that they can be encouraged.

He also emphasised on the need for an ecotourism department to promote influx of tourists and wildlife enthusiasts in the state.

Efforts to develop wildlife tourism near the dinosaur park constructed in Balasinor will also be made, he said in the meeting.
