The Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) in Vandalur and the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, have exchanged a few birds and animals under the Animal Exchange Programme. The animals sent to the Nandankanan zoo include a pair of Nilgiri langurs, two pairs of white peacocks, a pair of reticulated pythons and five pairs of painted storks.
In return, AAZP received five pairs of glossy ibis, two pairs of open billed storks, one pair of Himalayan bears, one pair of water monitors and a Siamese crocodile.
Earlier, several herbivores and carnivores were transferred to various zoological parks in the country in exchange for other animals and exotic birds. A zoo official said, “The breeding of rare species of wild animals, such as shangai (Thamin deer), swamp deer, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Indian gaur, wild dog, Indian tiger and the Asiatic lion, was successful. Avian species that bred successfully include the pea fowl, red jungle fowl and the Kaleej pheasant.”
