They are part of exchange programme
The Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) in Vandalur and the
Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, have exchanged a few
birds and animals under the Animal Exchange Programme. The animals sent
to the Nandankanan zoo include a pair of Nilgiri langurs, two pairs of
white peacocks, a pair of reticulated pythons and five pairs of painted
storks.
In return, AAZP received five pairs of glossy ibis, two pairs of open billed storks, one pair of Himalayan bears, one pair of water monitors and a Siamese crocodile.
Earlier, several herbivores and carnivores were transferred to various zoological parks in the country in exchange for other animals and exotic birds. A zoo official said, “The breeding of rare species of wild animals, such as shangai (Thamin deer), swamp deer, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Indian gaur, wild dog, Indian tiger and the Asiatic lion, was successful. Avian species that bred successfully include the pea fowl, red jungle fowl and the Kaleej pheasant.”

Male tiger dies
A 29-year old male tiger ‘Ruktham’, which was rescued from a circus in 2002, died on Sunday due to age-related ailments.
