Tiger, elephant adopted for Rs. 2.75 lakh
Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa has shown his love for animals again by renewing his animal adoption deal with Mysuru zoo.
He has adopted an elephant and a tiger for one year, from July 21, 2017 to July 20, 2018, paying a fee of Rs. 2.75 lakh. Mr. Darshan has sponsored the two animals for the past four years under the animal adoption scheme, which has become popular among wildlife enthusiasts and animal lovers.
The zoo’s executive director, Ravishankar, said the actor’s gesture and patronage would go a long way in the conservation and welfare of animals and birds. He thanked Mr. Darshan for his participation in wildlife conservation, adding that it would inspire more celebrities to come forward and adopt animals.
In the past, cricketers, film stars, politicians and industrialists have adopted animals. Although the adoption scheme did not receive very good response in its initial years, there has been a gradual rise in the number of adoptions.
Former Indian cricketers Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath were also instrumental in making the scheme popular. Mr. Kumble had adopted a giraffe calf and an Asiatic lion, while Mr. Srinath adopted a jaguar. Former speedster Zaheer Khan also once adopted a tiger.
The zoo management is pinning its hopes on corporates to come forward and adopt animals as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility activities.
