Caught between the don and the deep sea

| TNN | Nov 22, 2017, 08:00 IST
KODINAR: Kodinar is a small town sandhwiched between the Arabian sea to its south and the Gir forest. With the forest precluding most agricultural activities, limestone deposits along the coast — a feature of the peninsular coastline from Porbandar to Bhavnagar — are the bedrock of industry and the main source of income for the mining mafia.

The town is the taluka headquarter of Gir-Somnath district, 50km down a terrible highway from the district headquarters at Veraval. This is the stomping ground of BJP's Junagadh Ex-MP, Dinu Bogha Solanki. Dinubha, who became the BJP MP from Junagadh in 2009, was elected Kodinar MLA in 1998, 2002 and 2007.

Solanki stands accused of masterminding the slaying of RTI activist Amit Jethava, who was shot dead outside the Gujarat high court on July 20, 2010, soon after he had filed a PIL objecting to widespread illegal mining within the protected Gir forest.

Interestingly, Jethava had contested the 2007 elections against Dinubha as an independent and polled barely 1.5% of valid votes.

The Gujarat high court had recently ordered a complete retrial in the murder case, as an unprecedented number of witnesses had turned hostile, with several plainly complaining that Dinubha was pressurizing them.

The Supreme Court later decreed that only 26 key witnesses be re-examined, rather than conduct a complete retrial. Dinubha is currently in jail, having surrendered to a CBI court on November 6.

President of the Samudri Shramik Surakshan Sangh (association for protection of maritime workers) Balubhai Socha says, "This region around Kodinar is fully at the mercy of Dinubha. Limestone mining and transport businesses are firmly in his control. He is from the Karadia Rajput community, which makes up about 42,000 of the Kodinar seat's 1.84 lakh voters. There are 48,000 Kolis, 30,000 Dalits, 15,000 Muslims and other smaller groups here.

"Dinubha became a member of the taluka panchayat in 1982 and his rise has been unstoppable ever since the Ambuja cement factory came to this area. As the assembly seat became reserved for SCs, Jethalal Solanki became the MLA. He won in 2012 by around 8,000 votes. He was originally in the Dinu Bogha faction of the BJP but they later parted ways. The nagarpalika and taluka panchayat are both with the BJP since 1995."

Jethalal, who was a parliamentary secretary, was denied the BJP ticket for 2017 and resigned from the party on November 18, just before the BJP declared its candidate. The BJP Kodinar ticket has gone to Rambhai Vadher while Congress has fielded Mohan Vala. Jethalal had defeated Vala by 8,477 votes in 2012.

Shiva Solanki, Dinubha's nephew and a co-accused in the Amit Jethava murder case, is the current president of Kodinar municipality.

Shiva says, "We will win this seat as a gift for Dinubha. We have an army of 10,000 volunteers for the campaign. The seat can't go to a Karadia Rajput because it is reserved for SCs. Dinubha has anyway worked for all sections of society."

Shiva was elected to the municipality on a BJP ticket, but the city BJP unit was split due to Dinubha and Jethalal falling out. The clout of the Dinubha faction can be made out from the fact that Shiva rules the Kodinar municipality with the support of 27 independents, all of whom defeated BJP's nominees.

Polluted water blamed for death of lion cub at zoo

Swathi Vadlamudi HYDERABAD, November 21, 2017 00:00 IST

Prima facie it was ruled as “death due to natural causes”

Polluted water from Miralam Tank is one among the suspected causes of the death of ‘Mahishmati’, the Asiatic lion cub in the Nehru Zoological Park on Saturday night. Veterinarians who had conducted post-mortem on the 15-month-old’s body, found the internal organs partially damaged, and suspect that it could have been due to water contamination. Other than that, there was no apparent reason for the sudden death of the feline.
Another plausible trigger could have been undiagnosed congenital health problems, they say.
“During the post-mortem, we found the liver and the kidneys of the cub to be partly damaged. We suspect that it could have been due to the highly polluted water from Miralam Tank which flows through the zoo park,” said a veterinarian from the team of doctors that had conducted the autopsy.
The deceased cub and three of its siblings were reportedly released into the Safari about three months ago, exposing them to the water outlet from the Miralam Tank running through the zoo.
While Mahishmati died all of a sudden without any outward symptoms, the other three are doing fine, officials informed. However, they will be checked for the levels of toxicity in the body, and administered anti-toxins if need be.
The zoo had summoned experts externally for the post-mortem, and there were 10 to 12 doctors in the team, including those from Veterinary Biological Research Institute, Lacones (CCMB), and the College of Veterinary Science, apart from the zoo’s own veterinarians.
They could not find any external injury or bite which could have caused the death, and food poisoning too was ruled out because the animals were kept without food for the entire previous day. Hence, prima facie, it was ruled as “death due to natural causes”.
However, samples of internal organs have been collected to be sent for forensic analysis to ascertain the precise reason, highly placed officials from the Forest department have informed. According to the statistics submitted to the Central Zoo Authority, the zoo had lost 49 animals and birds in 2015-16 to old age, infighting, and digestive tract disorders. Of the deceased, 40 were mammals, seven were birds and two were reptiles.

AHMEDABAD: The Supreme Court has allowed an NGO, Wildlife Conservation Trust, Rajkot, to join a contempt petition filed by Ajay Dubey, a wildlife activist from Madhya Pradesh. Dubey has challenged the non-implementation of the SC order given in 2013, directing translocation of lions from Sasan Gir to Kuno Palpur in Madhya Pradesh.

The NGO has submitted that translocation of any wild animal, as defined in the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, cannot be undertaken without the specific approval of the state. Citing behavioural concerns of lions the petitioner submitted that to order translocation without considering pride behaviour may act counterproductive to to survival of the big cats.

HYDERABAD: The year-old female lion cub in Nehru zoological park, named Mahismati because her birth closely coincided with the release of ‘Baahubali’, passed away on Saturday. Cause of death: unknown. Belonging to the Asiatic lion species, the category is listed as ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List because of its small population.
Zoo officials say that the reason for her death is still under investigation. The veterinary doctors at the zoo have collected samples. They say that the cub was looking healthy until Friday night. The enclosure was immediately checked for any reptiles or external causes of death, but nothing was found.

Shivani Dongre, the curator, says, “The enclosure couldn’t have had anything in it because all these cubs were always together and none of them has been harmed. We will be keeping a check on the three other cubs as well.” The mother of the cub was also born in the zoo and she seemed restless throughout the day while the cub was taken away, say zoo officials. Zoo officials also say that there was no change in the eating habits of Mahismati and no alteration in her regular behaviour.

Peacock makes daring escape attempt from Calgary Zoo but gets eaten by lion instead

The only trace left of the peacock after it flew off was feathers in the lion enclosure.

A peacock that made a heroic escape attempt during a round-up of birds at Calgary Zoo saw his break for freedom end up in the jaws of a lion.
The free-range birds were being rounded up and moved ahead of winter into cold weather quarters at the Canadian zoo, but one peacock surprised keepers by suddenly taking off and flying unusually high and fast.
The bird flew some distance away but ended up in the lion enclosure, which houses two males. Zookeepers later found feathers in the enclosure, and they believe the two lions would have been quick to notice their intruder.
Announcing the news in a statement on 9 November, the zoo said: "At this time of year a lot of changes happen with our animal residents, and one species that is used to roaming the grounds takes to indoors over the winter. Our peacocks get re-located to winter habitats and wait until warmer weather when they can again explore the gardens.
"This year, one of our males took to flight while being rounded up for the season and managed to fly into the lion habitat. Unfortunately it did not end up well for the peacock as our two male lions were quick to notice the visitor. The peacock did not survive. The remaining six peacocks are now in their winter holding."
Zoo spokesperson Trish Exton-Parder told the Calgary Herald: "It's not normal peacock behaviour that a bird would fly that high and that far into a habitat. To go as high as it did over a building is a feat in itself."

Exton-Parder also told Canadian news website The Star it was a "very shocking incident" for the zoo's animal care team. "There's nothing that they would have changed to have prevented something like this, so it's not a fault issue, it's just a peacock who randomly chose to take off in a different direction and landed in an unfortunate situation," she said.
The zookeepers now need to decide whether anything needs to change in the transfer process before next season, as they are all too aware there is a chance another bird "might make a choice to go a different direction".
This was the second peacock death at Calgary Zoo this year, after a fox broke into the grounds and left a partially-eaten bird carcass for zookeepers to find in April. The remaining peacocks were quickly rounded up and moved into an enclosure for their safety as the female fox temporarily settled into a non-public area of the zoo and gave birth to a litter of kits.

Lion number drops in Vandalur zoo after death of lioness

| Updated: Nov 16, 2017, 07:08 IST

CHENNAI: The carnivore population in the zoo continues to take a beating after a six-year-old lioness Mala died at the zoo on Wednesday. With this the lion population in the zoo has come down to 15.

Zoo authorities said the death was caused by puncture of the lioness' uterus. Only on Monday, the female delivered a stillborn male cub. Within the next couple of days, the mother also died. A postmortem has been conducted by the zoo authorities, which revealed the punctured uterus, which led to the death of lioness.

A senior veterinary officer said this kind of problem is faced generally by some of the lionesses delivering cubs for the first time. When the cub was born a few days ago, at that time itself the mother would have suffered some injuries on her uterus.

This injury would have resulted in profuse internal bleeding, damaging the internal organ. Such injuries are not visible externally. Soon after the birth of a stillborn, the zoo veterinarians would have surely administered antibiotics to the mother. This is being done to avoid internal infection to her, the veterinarian said. Nearly a decade ago, the zoo was having a very large population of big cats, especially the Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica). At that time more than 35 lions were there. Apart from this there was huge population of lions that were rescued from circuses, following ban of lions and tigers in the show business.

SC notice to govt over contempt plea.

| tnn | Nov 15, 2017, 06:35 IST
AHMEDABAD: The Supreme court acting on a contempt petition filed by wildlife activists from Madhya Pradesh has issued notices to the government of India and Gujarat government. The petitioner, Ajay Dubey has challenged the non-implementation of the apex court order of April 2013, directing translocation of lions to Kuno Palpur in Madhya Pradesh from Sasan Gir in Gujarat, and has sought action against the Union government and state government of Gujarat.

"We welcome the court's decision. Translocation of lions is not only important for the environment but also for the poor people in Sheopur. They will get a new source of livelihood," said Dubey after the notices were issued.
